Giving Tuesday
Hubbard Lake Community Association/Friends of the Hubbard Lake Center participated in Giving Tuesday on December 2nd. THANK YOU for all of your contributions to help us to finish the Community Center/Library! What is Giving Tuesday? It’s the annual event dedicated to boosting radical generosity, held on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The idea behind Giving Tuesday was to set aside a single day to counter consumerism by giving back.
Launched in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y, Giving Tuesday became an independent organization in 2019 and has since expanded globally. Today it includes five international hubs, Giving Tuesday Spark, a youth leadership development initiative, and the Giving Tuesday Data Commons, where a team of researchers track and report on trends in generosity.
Today, Giving Tuesday’s global network of over 110 country leaders and thousands of community leaders collaborates year-round to inspire generosity, with the shared goal of building a world where generosity is part of everyday life.
THE STORY OF HUBBARD LAKE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
Early Roots: Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Around 1945-46, a group of Hubbard Lake residents formed the Hubbard Lake Planning Committee. In 1946, that same spirit of service led to the creation the volunteer fire department. In 1953, the Planning group filed Articles of incorporation and became the Hubbard Lake Citizens Inc. with assets of one fire truck and $1000. Property owners donated land, fundraising began, and the community constructed its first building to house both the fire truck and a community center. As the fire department expanded, it quickly outgrew that original building. Through continued fundraising and generous donations, a new fire station was built in the mid-1970s, with an addition in the mid-1990s. In 1981, Hubbard Lake Citizens Inc. changed its name to Hubbard Lake Community Association Inc., a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization. By the mid-1990s, the fire department began receiving funding through local millages and no longer relied on the Community Association as its primary funding source. That shift opened the door to a new dream.

A New Vision: A community Center and Library.
Discussion began for a new building to house the community center and library branch. In November 2006, the first $1000 was donated to building fund established at the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan. A variety of fundraising events began to grow the fund. On April 16,2020, Articles of incorporation were filed for Friends of Hubbard Lake Center Inc. a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – making the project eligible to apply for grants. Then momentum soared: In 2020, a local family donated $244,000 to the building fund, and fundraising went into overdrive.
Breaking Ground. Groundbreaking took place on June 9, 2024, with construction following soon after. Fundraisers, donation drives, grant writing continued while community support even grew stronger. Soon, a new building began to rise at the back of the lot – funded entirely by donations and community support. In December 2025, the old building was demolished to make way for a new parking lot. On April 15, 2026, The Certificate of Occupancy was issued, and the Alcona County Library branch moved in the first week of May. On September 6, 2026, the community gathered for the official ribbon cutting and blessing, with the public invited to celebrate and tour the new center and library.
Today and Tomorrow. Today, The Hubbard Lake Community Center/Library offers: Facilities to rent, Exercise Classes , Adult Programs, Community events and outreach programs and Library Programs. The Library has doubled in size and now features a computer lab, high-speed internet, and a dedicated children’s reading and play area.
